Their relationship has grown over time, shaped by conversations and small moments of care. “She becomes like part of my family,” Mdm Tan smiles. Candice, living in Singapore away from her own family, echoes the sentiment: “She’s like a mother to me. She’s inspiring, because even when she’s going through a lot herself, she still finds the strength to care for others. She gives me advice and encourages me to keep going, even when I’m tired.”

Unearthing a framed certificate, Mdm Tan shares that she was honoured with the SingHealth Inspirational Patient Award in 2024. Despite her illness, she continues to support fellow cancer patients by distributing meals and offering a listening ear. She says it’s only possible because of the steady care she receives from Candice and Lions Befrienders. Mdm Tan makes sure to reciprocate this support with warmth and generosity. She gives out handmade thank you cards to the Lions Befrienders who have journeyed with her, remembering their names and writing letters of encouragement. Candice remembers one moment in particular — a day when she was rushing between appointments and hadn’t had time for lunch. 

Without hesitation, Mdm Tan set out a meal for her. “One of the most rewarding things about this work is when we receive encouragement from the seniors that we serve,” Candice says.
