Rhythm for Wellness (R4W) is an initiative by Lions Befrienders and KKH Research Team, supported by Toteboard. Through the power of drumming, R4W brings seniors together to discover joy, build meaningful friendships and rediscover a sense of vitality through music and rhythm.
For Mdm Kim, drumming began with a simple passion — a curiosity and love for music. When she heard about the Rhythm for Wellness programme (R4W) at Lions Befrienders Active Ageing Centre @ Bendemeer 32, she did not hesitate. She signed up right away, even turning to YouTube to eagerly learn more about drumming before her first session.
“I started out drumming with a passion to know more about music,” she shares.
“Whatever pain and stress you carry, you can release it through drumming. The music makes it even more impactful — it makes me happy and makes me feel better.”
Inspired by the positive change in herself, she brought that joy home. She began encouraging her mother to join the programme, knowing she could benefit from both the movement and the social connection.
What she witnessed was heartwarming.
“I could see my mum becoming happier. Even when she says she’s okay, I can tell through her actions — her mood became better. She became like a child again, so cheeky.”
At 94 years old, her mother found joy in something unexpected — upbeat, energetic drumming that brought life and laughter back into her days. It was a powerful reminder that it is never too late to discover joy.
As her journey continued, Mdm Kim was given the opportunity to be trained as a facilitator. But to her, this role meant more than just leading sessions.
“It’s not just about facilitating the programme. It’s about connecting with seniors.”
