A curiosity to learn, and to discover new things daily, even as she grows older.
When you step into Mdm Kek Poh Heok’s home, one of the first things you might notice is how neat and orderly everything is. The next thing you’ll notice is the array of gadgets: a state-of-theart TV with a remote that turns into a mouse, a multi-functional alarm clock that doubles as a thermometer and stopwatch, and perhaps the karaoke machine complete with colourful microphones.
But these aren’t just household conveniences. They’re also proof of Mdm Kek’s resourcefulness and love of learning, especially when it comes to technology. Curious and independent, her journey is supported by the steadfast team at Lions Befrienders.
Living without family at 77 years old, Mdm Kek has been receiving regular home visits from Wong Yu He Mark, 36, a Senior Executive with the Community Wellbeing & Support Services department. This team helps address the needs of seniors outside the boundaries of Lions Befrienders’ Active Ageing Centres, who may otherwise fall outside the typical programme and service offerings.
“It’s good to have someone there to help me with things and listen to me talk,” Mdm Kek shares. “Sometimes my relatives are busy and can’t visit as often as I’d like.”
Mark – or Ah Ho, as Mdm Kek affectionately calls him – is a seasoned member of the team. With 11 years of experience, he sees his work as more than just check-ins. “It’s about offering psycho-social support, especially for seniors who live alone and may not have someone looking out for them,” he explains. On his visits, Mark assists her in reading letters, running small errands, and addressing any issues she might be facing.
