Making Every Day a Happy One

From Caregiver to Creator

Mdm. Ng’s life has always been about doing. From a young wife and working mother to a devoted caregiver to her late husband, she has spent a lifetime putting others first.

“年轻的时候就是一面照顾孩子,一面做工啦,”

“I was raising kids and sewing for garment factories at the same time — always doing something.”

Her husband’s passing in 2022 marked not an end, but the beginning of something new after many years of caregiving. There was more time to explore, more space to breathe. That was when a neighbour introduced her to Lions Befrienders.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” she admits. “But from the first day, they welcomed me warmly.”

Rediscovering Joy

At the AAC, Mdm. Ng found something she hadn’t experienced in a long time — not just companionship, but a sense of fun.

“我们可以一起做手工、一起玩乐器、一起去水上运动!就是要一起,感情才会越来越好。”

“We can do crafts together, play musical instruments together, even go for water activities together! The more we do things together, the stronger our bond becomes.”

From crafting to learning new skills, her days are now filled with creativity and camaraderie. She’s particularly known for her beautiful crochet work — a skill she first picked up in primary school and later honed through Japanese crafts books. At that time, even though she did not understand the language, she figured it out by following the pictures. Nowadays, it is much easier to learn from YouTube videos and she discovered that what really makes her happy is teaching others.

“有些人从来没接触过钩针,我就握着他们的手,慢慢教。她们现在做得很好咧!”
“Some people had never touched a crochet hook before. I guided their hands — and now they’re doing so well!”

Though she’s modest and insists she’s “not a real teacher,” her peers would say otherwise. She has all the hallmarks of a teacher with her patience, warmth, and presence when they need help.

“大家一起学、一起做,不是我教你,是我们一起进步。”
“We learn and do together — I’m not the teacher. We all grow together.”

Community That Cares — Especially in Crisis

The friendships and support that Mdm. Ng found at Lions Befrienders became even more apparent during one of the most uncertain periods in recent history — the Covid-19 pandemic.

When strict restrictions were in place and many seniors felt isolated and anxious, the Lions Befrienders team didn’t disappoint — they doubled down on care.

“他们真的很好,会一个个敲门,问我们要不要买东西。”
“They would go door to door, checking in on us, asking if we needed groceries or help.”

For someone like Mdm. Ng, who lives alone, that gesture meant everything.

“不管我们是租户还是屋主,他们都一样照顾。”
“Whether we rent or own our homes, they treat us all with the same care.”

The staff’s dedication and the community’s solidarity gave her a sense of security and belonging during those uncertain times. It reminded her that she wasn’t alone.

A Life That’s Blossomed

Today, Mdm. Ng’s life is filled with activity, laughter, and meaning. From morning market runs to lively crochet sessions, she enjoys the simple rhythm of community living.

She doesn’t worry about being remembered. What matters is now.

“记不记得都无所谓。现在我们大家合得来、开心就好了。”
“It doesn’t matter if people remember me. As long as we get along and are happy now — that’s enough.”

When asked what advice she’d give her younger self, she smiles:

“也是这样过了,就熬过来咯。”
“Just keep going — that’s how we all got through.”

You Too, Can Stitch a New Chapter

Today, Mdm. Ng is not just a participant — she’s a support of her community. Her warmth draws others in, and her skills help bring people together.

For anyone thinking of joining Lions Befrienders, her message is simple:

“来啦,不要整天一个人在家闷闷的。来这里,朋友多、活动多、日子也过得快!”
“Come lah — don’t stay home alone all the time and be bored. Here, there are many friends and activities, and the days fly by!”
