Aim of role:
Loneliness and social isolation continue to be issues impacting seniors, regardless of their health and economic statuses. Through befriending engagements, our seniors will feel supported and their overall emotional and psychological well-being can be maintained or improved.
Role Responsibilities:
1. To engage senior(s) through home visits at least 2-4 times per month, supplemented by 1-2 phone calls, depending on need.
2. To provide companionship to seniors and bring them some relief to their loneliness, isolation, or boredom i.e., doing activities together
3. To help support senior by assisting in meeting simple ad-hoc informal care requests where possible, i.e., how to troubleshoot use of mobile phones, etc.
4. To submit brief engagement report (check-calls report) after each home visit or session
5. To update programme staff on seniors’ progress and well-being, and to highlight to programme staff for any necessary referrals
Location:
Available areas* (island-wide) will be discussed upon registration of interest
*Openings are based on new incoming referrals by Agency of Integrated Care (AIC) or re-assignment to regions not yet affected by Ministry of Health (MOH)’s Eldercare Model Transition.
Commitment Level / Frequency:
Weekly or Monthly Face-to-Face home visits/sessions
Requirements & Skills
• Volunteers must be aged 21 years and above
• Able to commit at least 6 months
• Enjoys or is comfortable with speaking and engaging seniors through conservations and activities
• Conversant in Mandarin/Malay/Tamil and/or dialects will be advantageous
*New Befrienders will have to attend an Orientation Training before commencement
